KSHSAA 2026 Regional Piano Festival Procedure
Make sure your music is prepared

- Take your original music to the festival. As usual, no photocopies are permitted at music festivals.
- Erase all practice markings you do not wish the judge to see.
- Using a red ink pen, write the measure numbers in your piece above each bar line. If you are unsure how to do this, check with your Vance Music teacher.
- On the title page of your book, write your first and last names along with your contact information. If you are uncomfortable including your phone number inside the book, please feel free to include the Vance Music phone number (316-264-1567)
Your Arrival and Room Procedures
- Make sure to arrive a minimum of thirty minutes before your performance time.
- Check in with the room monitor by your performance room prior to proceeding to the practice rooms. If you are unsure where the practice rooms are, you can ask the performance room monitor for directions.
- Warm up in a practice room when one is available. Make sure to limit your warm-up to five minutes. This allows the room can be used by other students. Remember the warm up should adequately prepare you mentally and physically for performing.
- Return to your performance room and check in with the room monitor again.
- Open your music to the correct page for the judge and give it to the performance room monitor.
- When it is your turn to perform, walk to the piano and take time to adjust your bench.
- You will not warm up on the piano before your song unless the judge specifically invites you to do so. If invited to warm up, warm up with a scale; make sure you do not warm up by playing part of your piece.
- When the judge is ready for your performance, stand in front of the piano to announce.
- In a loud, clear voice, announce your name, school, grade, the song title, and the name of your piece’s composer.
- Make sure to smile.
- Be seated at the piano, re-check your position, breathe, and perform your song for the KSHSAA 2026 Regional Piano Festival.
- Smile and bow (first to the adjudicator, then to the audience if they are not seated in the same area).
- Wait outside the performance room until your music is returned to you by the performance room monitor.
- Scores will be posted in a common area. If not, score sheets will be made available to your school teacher and scores will also be posted online.
- Be patient as you wait for your scores! Judges are only permitted to award a certain number of “I” ratings, so they often need to listen to a dozen students before they can determine how students compare to one another.
- Performers who receive a ‘I’ rating at the KSHSAA 2026 Regional Piano Festival will go on to perform at the KSHSAA 2026 State Piano Festival.

Receiving & Understanding Scores

- Students will be awarded ratings, or scores, from their adjudicators between ‘I’ and ‘V’. The scores are traditionally marked using Roman Numerals (From highest to lowest: I = 1 , II = 2, III = 3, IV = 4, V = 5).
